Film Analysis

Cinematography

Throughout the film the director makes a good use of a variety of shots from close-ups to over-the-shoulder-reverse shots that clearly give the film a large portfolio of different viewpoints to see from but these are mostly in the form of simple shots rather than complex shots such as pans or zooms rather just POV's or different agnled shots.

However the takes alot of advantages of the film oppertunities for effective match-on-actions which is something i intend to take away from thsi film that a match-on-action can really transform an otherwise boring scene into a fast paced more interesting scenes

Editing

Continuity was near perfect throughout with very little evidence of stop motion or
broken timing, even the sound and effects flowed very well and didn't cause much distortion. Even the jump cuts didn't break the film and actually created good effects and let the audience know what was a flashback and what was present and also the slow motion created an excellent effect that told the audicne "this was significant" and made them pay attention and take note.

On a final note the film made use of fade in-fade outs in order the display the passge of time from one location to another which is something the group took note of and intend to implement into the film to represent the passage of time from which could come in handy for us if we reach a scene where we don't know how to transition between it and another.

Music

The sound score proved very appropriate for the genre with the use of non-diagetic taking priority over diagetic sound which is near enough removed from the whole production. It could be seen that the absense of diagetic sound could make the film appear too serious but none the less created an effective atmosphere which helped add the the film as a whole.

However the film made almost no use of any sound effects which greatly played down certain scenes such as the hanging scene which is something i intend to remedy in our production by using sound effects to add to the tense attituse. This was done in the action scene too which i still feel was a great mistake.

Mis En Sene

Black and White gave the film a very classic and timeless feel which was appropriate for the genre and ultimately added a negative feel which again suited the film plot. The acting was near flawless even the slight accents were perfectly pronounced and despite a lsight stiffness in the hanging scene which made it alittle too obvious it was fake it was pretty good all things considered.

However throughout there was no real sense of tension or fear which could have been due to the lack of diagetic sound or sound effects but it all grouped together to make a very interesting film despite this, the clothes were minimalistic but appropriate, the focussing on the necklace singled it out nicely and the makeup in the action scene was agin well done and effective in that if displayed well what had happened without any doubt.

The last point however will be negative in that the end credits went by too fast making it hard for the audinece to praise whoever was involved which is something we intend to remedy in our film bu having slow purposeful credits at the beginning with accompnying images so as to intise the audience.

Final Review INT. Derek's home--DAY

Montage when Derek is putting DVDs in to a player and is writing down a review in a notebook in scrappy handwriting and taking out the DVD and replacing a new one, throwing down a full notebook, picking up another and flicking through the pages to find a space for a new review, rummaging through a pile of old pens to find one that works, testing the pen on the note book cover before beginning to write his review. The montage uses jump cuts and other editing techniques to demonstrate to mental condition of the character.

INT. OFFICE--DAY

Derek is in the corner of the office looking at a video camera he had picked up and his way to work. When he gets there he checks that he has been given everything he order as a colleague called John walks up to him.

BEN

Heyup Derek, what you up to.

DEREK

Oh hi John, I just got here and I'm just looking at this camera I bought.

BEN

Fair enough, just came over her because you dropped one of your DVDs.

Ben pulls the DVD from out of his pocket and shows it to Derek who has a look of slight confusion in his face as he inspects the disc.

DEREK

Are you sure, I can't remember taking any discs with me

BEN

Well it fell out of your bag I just presumed that it might be yours

DEREK

Hmm, I must have bought it a while ago and forgot about it

BEN

Must have

DEREK

Well thanks for letting me know about that

BEN

No problem pal, see you later

DEREK

(Whilst inspecting the disc) Yeah see you later Ben

Derek drops the DVD on to the table. (Scene cuts away to the next scene)

EXT. Derek's car--day

Derek drops the DVD on to the passenger seat and closes the door. He walks round to the driver side and opens the door and gets in and drives away.

INT. Basement car park--day

Derek arrives and parks his car. He picks the DVD up from the passenger seat and gets out of the car. He walks for a few steps and a mysterious appears behind him, Derek turns to look at the mysterious figure, but when he turns back the mysterious figure is looming over his shoulder. Derek feeling nervous about the mysterious figure is following him runs out of the car park and in to a lift.

INT. Derek's flat--evening

Derek arrives at his flat and opens the door, locks it behind him and puts his coat on the coat rack. Derek then goes in to the kitchen area and drops the DVD in to a draw and wanders in to the living room, collapses on to the sofa and falls asleep. A loud bang is heard and Derek wakes up, thinking it may be nothing and goes back to sleep. Another, louder bang is heard and he sits up and runs around his flat to find the source of the bangs. When he turns the light on in the hall way, he sees the mysterious figure he saw earlier. A bang is heard for the left of screen and Derek turns his head. When he looks back the figure has gone. He walks back in to the living room and sees that his collection of DVDs have been spread across the floor. He sees that his notebook and the DVD he got earlier were on the table like the were ready to be reviewed. He sits at the table and picks up the DVD and note book and sees that the DVD hasn't been given a mark out of ten. He takes the DVD to the player and puts it in sits down and watches.

THE ACTUAL SNUFF FILM: (black and white film) the film starts off in a corridor and turns in a same Multi-purpose hall. The camera pans up to the top of some stairs and pans back to see the hooded figure who walks in to the camera which cuts to black and fades back in to the hooded figure walking away from the camera down a different hall way. The film then jump cuts the figure walk in to a room with a pre-tied noose hang in mid frame. The figure puts the noose round his neck and pulls down his hood revealing that it is Derek the jumps off his perch to hang himself.

As the figure on the TV hangs himself, Derek reaches out to the TV and shouts.

DEREK

NO!!!

As the feet drop on the TV screen. Derek's feet drop in front of the TV and swing lifelessly in front of the screen.

The films ends with a shot of a camcorder being turned off and the screen being closed in and a voice over of Ben's voice

VOICE OVER
oh before I forget, You've dropped one of your DVDs

Making the hanging scene

In our film we plan for our character to watch a snuff film at the end of the film at which time he realises that it's actually him on the tape.
In filming this scene there was a lot of serious safety risks involved with somebody have a rope around their neck and some risks to standing on a table.
we first did a risk assessment so we knew what the dangers were. Some were obvious for example if the actor fell down with the rope around his neck the rope could snag upon something and choke him. To reduce this risk we did a number of things, the first of which was that we didn't have the actor off the ground at any time whilst he had the rope was around his neck. We also didn't allow him to moved anywhere while the rope was around his neck from risk of him falling. The rope itself was tied properly at the noose but was pinned discreetly so that the rope couldn't tighten, if the pin was to fail, the rope was held up slackly by a light weight pole by the third member of our crew, Chris, who was to lower the pole immediately and let out more rope if anything was to go wrong.
For when the character steps off the table we used a small step for him to use which was around 6 inches tall and the rope was adjusted so when the actor stepped off there was plenty of rope to allow him to get to the ground comfortably without choking him.

Comments on filming and camera work

After reviewing all the footage captured for editing and overall i think the filming and camera work was good.
however some shots could have been shorter or performed quicker to make editing easier, and pieces of footage were blurred due to poor light, but the shots that were blurred were re-filmed and the problem was resolved.
we also had some problem with the cameras format due to other users as we found out as we captured our first pieces of footage. This problem was resolved when we were shown how to set the camera up to our preferred format.
overall the production part of our film wasn't too disrupted by problems and we were able to get some good shots for our film
